HEEL PAIN, CLINICAL EXAMINATION & TREATMENT PLAN

With foot pain almost at epidemic levels, the podiatric profession is best placed to assess, diagnose and treat it.

In this session, Dr. Tim Kilmartin discusses how podiatric medicine can elevate itself above other professions that treat foot and ankle pain to be recognised as the leading specialists in the successful treatment of such pain.

Dr. Kilmartin uses heel pain as an example of how podiatry can record a better patient history, examine this history as a means to establish a diagnosis, grade severity, determine the appropriate level of treatment and finally determine a prognosis.

Drawing the series to a close is Zoë Wilson. Zoë is fast becoming an influencing voice in podiatry across the UK, Ireland and further afield.

When she is not practising in her ZW Foot & Ankle Clinics in the Lakes District, she regularly speaks at conferences and events, most recently at the Ontario Society of Chiropodists Conference in Canada.

A graduate of the University of Salford with a Bachelor of Science degree in Podiatry she also plies her entrepreneurial skills promoting and selling her range of treatments for the foot and ankle.

AETIOLOGY OF THE ADULT ACQUIRED FLATFOOT: NEW INSIGHTS FROM RECENT RESEARCH

The creator of the Richie Brace AFO returns to deliver this session on the aetiology of adult acquired flat foot.

Dr. Richie received his doctorate in podiatric medicine from the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco in 1980 and has since won multiple awards for his work in podiatric medicine.

Dr. Richie has retired from 38 years of private practice in podiatric medicine and surgery in Seal Beach, California. He is currently running his company, Richie Technologies Inc., and also actively teaching students and practitioners in various biomechanics and orthotic therapy areas.

The Richie Brace range of AFOs consistently achieves excellent patient outcomes as a leading modality for the treatment of some of the most challenging foot and ankle pathologies

Firefly Gold is a series of rapid-fire webinars delivered by the podiatry profession’s leading practitioners, where they present their clinical gold in just 10 minutes using only 11 slides!

Julian Livingstone is a Consultant Podiatrist with an NHS practice at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and a number of private practices in and near London. Graduating in 1990 he was appointed as a Consultant podiatrist in 2002 within the Trauma and Orthopaedic team at Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals the first such consultant appointments in the UK. His special interests include the developing foot of children, flat feet in the adult and child, plantar fasciitis and heel pain, ankle pain, bunions, gait analysis, podiatric biomechanics and footwear. Mr Livingstone has an interest in teaching and has lectured at university courses as well as at national and international conferences in podiatry. He believes in bringing the best available evidence-based treatments to his patients.

Greg Gillanders graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2007. With experience in both the public and private health sectors as a Consultant Musculoskeletal Podiatrist, Greg has a particular interest in advanced biomechanics. He has treated patients of all ages and athletes of all levels including many elite athletes across many disciplines. He works in the delivery of podiatric MSK services within a multidisciplinary team including senior physiotherapists and consultant medics at Headley Court military hospital and is a partner in Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinics.

Greg is an expert in the field of orthotic and bracing therapy and his Firefly Gold is on the topic of off loading orthotic therapy for 2nd MTPJ synovitis.

Zoe Wilson kicks off our FIREFLY GOLD sessions and her presentation is on Adult Acquired Flat Foot & the Richie Brace. Zoe is the founder and owner of ZW Foot & Ankle, a busy Musculoskeletal Podiatry and Biomechanics clinic in Kendal, Lancashire. The Richie Brace is a hugely popular ankle foot orthoses supplied by Firefly. It comes in either a custom footplate or over the counter version and is commonly prescribed to treat adult acquired flat foot secondary to posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction, chronic degenerative arthritis of the ankle, and tendon injuries around the foot and ankle.

Sarah O’Connell of Firefly Foot & Ankle Clinic and Momentum Foot & Ankle is our second speaker in our FIREFLY GOLD series. Sarah is a graduate of NUI Galway where she currently lectures undergraduate podiatry students. Sarah began her professional career with Firefly where she now co-ordinates the company’s educational content. In 2020 Sarah graduated from the University of Ulster having completed her MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine. In recent months she has opened her own practice in her native County Galway.

Suzanne Hamilton specialises in sports medicine and has experience working across various sporting organisations including Crusaders Football Club and the Irish Rugby Football Union. In this 10 minute presentation, Suzanne presents a case history on a 60yr old female recreational walker with drop foot. Suzanne discusses assessing the patient’s sensation using dermatomes (an area of skin supplied by a single spinal nerve) and myotomes (a group of muscles innervated by a single spinal nerve pattern). Prescribing an ankle foot orthotic (AFO), discussing why the dynamic assist Richie Brace is the most appropriate device type for the patient and applying gait analysis technology. Suzanne also discusses the requirements of practitioners in Northern Ireland and Rep of Ireland to comply with the Medical Device Regulations. The session is followed by a brief question and answer session. Suzanne actively promotes the podiatry profession and podiatric medicine by pushing boundaries and seeking improved patient outcomes, this is why she is recognised as a Firefly Ambassador.

Firefly Summit 2017

On September 29th-30th, 2017, two hundred delegates including podiatrists, surgeons, students of podiatry, physiotherapists and two chiropractors traveled to the northwest coast of Ireland for the Firefly Summit. The summit was designed to share clinical evidence and strengthen relationships within the podiatric community – the motto for the weekend was Learn, Share, Care.

However, at Firefly, one of our goals is to remove such barriers associated with prescribing foot orthotics and present the opportunities these devices can have for the profession.
