IAN GRIFFITHS: RUNNING RE-TRAINING FOR MEDIAL TIBIAL STRESS SYNDROME

Ian Griffiths is one of the UK’s most influential podiatrist, excellently leveraging social media to promote both the podiatric profession and his own research. He’s also innovatively connecting podiatrists and other lower limb professionals around the world through his weekly podiatry live streams, PodChatLive, he co-hosts with Craig Payne.

We were delighted Ian travelled to Sligo to present at the Firefly Summit – it wasn’t a hard sell. Once we had arranged for him to play 18 holes on one of the world’s finest links golf courses, his bags were packed for Sligo.

New to prescribing foot orthoses or want grow your podiatric business by adding custom devices to your clinical offering? This guide gives you the low-down on prescribing foot orthoses. The fundamentals.

Trevor Prior: Power, Control or Gait Technique – How 3D Gait Aids Decision Making

Each of us have a degree of asymmetry in our gait. The degree of this asymmetry and the ability to control it determines function and potential for injury. Attempting to get everyone to function in a symmetrical pathway is all but impossible. So what are the available tools to measure patient gait and accurately diagnose injury?

In this rapid fire presentation, Trevor explains how he uses 3D gait analysis to acquire a more complete picture of a patient’s gait cycle. When assessing gait, Trevor describes how and why he focuses on three parameters:

  • sagittal pain: how it dampens and attenuates load, and generates power,
  • control features: frontal and transverse plane motion,
  • gait parameters: step length, step weight, vertical excursion and step rate.

Software is playing an ever-increasing role in aiding the podiatrist’s decision-making process in clinic, introducing greater accuracy of diagnosis. This presentation reveals why more podiatrists are choosing digital resources, such as how 3D gait analysis software compares a patient’s gait cycle values against an uninjured database to equip the podiatrist in arriving at an effective treatment plan.

About Trevor Prior

Trevor Prior is a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon at Homerton University Hospital. He works in private practice, is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and a Honorary Visiting Senior Clinical Fellow at the University of East London.

Eileen Dolan: Heel Pain Treatment – Cortisone, PRP or Botox A

It’s estimated 20% of patients who present at podiatry clinics complain of heel pain; a perfect reason as to why you need to watch Eileen Dolan’s Firefly Summit rapid-fire presentation.

Confusion Treating Plantar Pain

Discover why there is a school of thought suggesting plantar fasciitis should be categorised as two separate conditions.  With a myriad of treatments available, coupled with a lack of consensus from guidelines on how plantar fasciitis should be treated, Eileen explores injectable treatments, providing a systematic review of botox and PRP.

Key Concept

Despite the many treatment options available to the podiatric practitioner, Eileen says that 80% of plantar fasciitis conditions resolve within 12 months with conservative therapies – when the patient follows prescribed strengthening and conditioning exercises.

About Eileen Dolan

Eileen Dolan is an Advanced Podiatrist within the Orthopaedic ICATS team in the Western trust. She also works in a private practice in the neighbouring county town of Enniskillen specialising in MSK and Orthopaedics.

Wayne Edwards: Asymmetrical injury patterns linked to skeletal influences/drivers using observational video analysis

The next speaker to feature in our #FireflySummit series is Podiatrist Wayne Edwards. Wayne’s presentation focuses on asymmetrical injury patterns linked to skeletal drivers / influencers using observational video analysis.

The presentation explores how to assess and identify such common injury patterns and describes how to use video gait analysis to direct effective management plans for asymmetrical injury in the lower limb / foot.

About Wayne Edwards

Wayne graduated from the London Foot hospital in 1991. He has worked in both the NHS and private sector since qualifying and has post graduate qualifications in sports medicine and clinical podiatric biomechanics.

He has worked closely within physiotherapy teams in the private sector for the last 15 years and has a thorough understanding of the use of orthotic therapy in management of lower limb pain and injury as well as injury prevention.

Wayne has taken a special interest in the identification and treatment of underlying causes of injuries in runners.

All Ireland Podiatry Conference

The All Ireland Podiatry Conference takes place in County Armagh later this month [27 & 28th April]. For the first time both SCP Northern Ireland and the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Ireland will come together to host a two day event at the Armagh City Hotel.

The Firefly Orthoses team will be attending both days of the event, exhibiting at the trade expo. During the event Firefly will be promoting the benefits of digital scanning – a efficient method of using technology to capture patient foot data.

We will also be delivering a workshop on prescribing custom made foot orthoses. This workshop is designed to build confidence of practitioners who wish to add custom made orthoses to their range of clinical therapies offered. Delivered by Martin Mc Geough, Firefly’s founder and medical director, the workshop breaks downs the barriers commonly associated with prescribing custom made orthoses.

We will have samples of our range of products including over the counter devices, Richie Brace AFOs and our own range of custom made devices.

Katherine Cook: Leg Length Differences: Measurement and Pressure Plate Analysis

We progress to the seventh of our #FireflySummit rapid-fire presentations with physiotherapist Katherine Cook taking the stage. Katherine specialises in biomechanics, 3D motion analysis systems (CODA) and accelerometer.

Her presentation explores critical assessment of patients for leg length discrepancy [LLD] and whether any such difference is clinically relevant.

LLD have been linked to patellofemoral pain and knee osteoarthritis. Addressing LLD has been found to improve back pain and relationships have been found between LLD and gait deviations.

About Katherine Cook

Katherine graduated as a Physiotherapist from the University of Wales, Cardiff in 1999. After completing Junior and Senior posts in Portsmouth she moved to London and started her PhD at Kings College, London. Her biomechanical research involved comparison of 3D motion analysis systems (CODA) and accelerometry, particularly focussing on age related changes and factors associated with dynamic balance and falls.

Katherine completed her PhD in 2008 and returned to clinical work in the private sector. She began working for the MOD in 2008 and continues to enjoy working as a biomechanical specialist. Katherine ‘s life consists of trying to work like she doesn’t have children and bringing up the children like she doesn’t work.
