Firefly Distributes Social Good Session Monies

Part of Firefly’s mission is to give back within the community – both locally and internationally. At the Firefly Summit 2017, the Social Good sessions raised over £1,000 for three charitable projects Firefly contributes to and helps promote when not manufacturing and distributing foot orthoses!

Firefly capitalised on the positive vibes during the Social Good Session and raffled off a MESI automated ankle brachial pressure indexing diagnostic device to raise donations for these fantastic projects.  A massive thank you to all who contributed and well done to Angela McAnearney from Galway whose name was pulled from the hat to win the prize!

The raffle raised €1,681 in total and the monies have been split equally between the three projects that featured during the Social Good sessions.

During the Summit, big wave surfer Easkey Britton explored the power of surfing as a creative medium for cross-cultural connection and women’s empowerment in places such as Iran. As a student of podiatry, Sarah O’Connell initiated foot health clinics in Tanzania along with her colleague Ailbhe Murray [pictured above]. Sarah recently presented a cheque to Ailbhe Murray with a share of the money raised for the Feet First programme following the Firefly Summit.

Saskia Rysenbry spoke about her experience building and running a income-generation cafe in South India as a means to support marginalised and disadvantaged groups of girls, women and elderly and empower the local community.

Galway Podiatrist wins MESI device | Firefly Summit

Angela McAnearney and Sarah O’Connell

Galway podiatrist Angela McAnearney was the lucky winner of the much sought after MESI ABPI MD diagnostic machine at the recent #FireflySummit.

The device was the prize for the Firefly Social Good raffle with all money raised going toward the three social good projects Firefly support.

The Social Good sessions provided an opportunity for Firefly to promote some of the projects the company contribute to outside of the manufacture and distribution of orthoses. Easkey Britton, Sarah O’Connell and Saskia Rysenbry spoke to the Summit delegates about their adventures in far flung lands where they facilitated and delivered projects to improve the lives of those less well off.

We’re sure the MESI device will add value to Angela’s practice in Galway city.  If you didn’t attend the Firefly Summit you can read more about the event in the Firefly Summit report here.

Firefly Summit 2017: A conference with a difference

The podiatric event of the year isn’t all about podiatry. Delegates of the Firefly Summit 2017 will be experiencing all the very best Sligo has to offer. Find out just what they’ll be getting up to.

The Foot Project to Bring Aid to Migrant Crisis.

The Foot Project is returning to Greece again bringing their podiatry expertise to aid the continuing migrant crisis there. Firefly Orthoses continue to support this hugely important initiative that emphasises the value of podiatry within a primary healthcare spectrum.

During the 2016 annual SCP conference in Glasgow, Firefly met podiatrist Jack Loveday who plays a central role in the Foot Project. Firefly donated a selection of our over the counter (OTC) range of orthoses to the project.

Jack was part of a team of six podiatrists who visited a migrant camp in northern Greece earlier this year. As it was the team’s first visit to the location they were unsure what to expect on their arrival.  On review of their week long trip in early 2017, Jack reported the OTC devices provided by Firefly were crucial in treating many of the patients:

The orthotics Firefly donated to us this year have been by far the most useful item that we have taken on these trips, and the most well received – they have made a huge impact! – Jack Loveday

Ahead of their second trip to Greece, the group is seeking funding via a crowdfunding drive. We would encourage you to make a contribution to this worthy cause. Donate by visiting this link.

Excellence in Healthcare 2017

We’re back on the road again, this time visiting Glasgow to attend the Excellence in Healthcare conference. The event runs across the 8th and 9th of June at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.

Firefly is represented at the conference by the wonderful Claire Carr. Make sure you call by to the Firefly stand to talk to Claire about Firefly’s range of foot orthoses and our other technical support services provided to Firefly’s customers.

Firefly’s Claire at Health in Excellence 2017

Claire will be on hand to provide info on our new shell material Delrin:

roughly half as much DELRIN® is required as that of a standard Polypropylene shell. Therefore, 2.5mm DELRIN® = 5mm Polypropylene to create the same level of support and can still be heat adjusted in the manner of a standard Polypropylene shell.

Also on display at the Firefly Orthoses stand are samples of the Richie Brace ankle foot orthotic. Firefly is the only licensed supplier of the Richie Brace to the Irish and UK market.

The conference incorporates four individual conferences in medicine, surgery, travel medicine, and podiatric medicine running in parallel over two days. Delegates will be free to move between the parallel conferences and attend sessions of interest from the different disciplines.

The four individual conferences will come together for key plenary sessions by inspirational speakers including:

  • John Meara, Harvard Medical School
  • James Logan, Department of Disease Control
  • Catherine Calderwood, Chief Medical Officer for Scotland
  • Greig Trout, Cancer Survivor
